The lytic cycle of a viral or phage infection results in the complete reproduction of viral particles within the cell, including their exit from the cell. In many cases this will cause lysis (some viruses, mostly enveloped viruses, 'bud' from the cell, removing a portion of the membrane as its envelope but leaving the cell intact). In contrast, some viruses can persist as dormant in the host via the lysogenic cycle. In this case, the viral genome is inserted into host chromosomal DNA and replicates with host cells until an environmental change stimulates a physiological response in the cell and triggers the change from lysogenic to lytic cycle, leading to production of viral particles. An example in humans is Herpes simplex virus (cold sores), which estimates suggest infects 90% of people worldwide. However, the virus is dormant in nerve cells and is activated often when the immune system is weakened, then giving the symptoms - cold sores.
Which is more dangerous is more contentious. While the lytic cycle results in symptoms immediately, the lysogenic cycle enable a virus to remain dormant and to 'strike' when conditions are best suited (i.e., the host is most susceptible). On the other hand, symptoms only occur during full replication of the virus, i.e., in lytic phase.
I'm not sure what the difference is between 'fact' and 'know for sure' are. I suppose the latter paragraph is my opinion.
