depends on the kind of seed.

Some seed which is adapted to germination in temperate zones with a clear winter needs to be cold or even frozen in order for the seed to germinate (look up breaking seed dormancy). If the seed is adapted to tropical conditions freezing seeds could kill it. Other seeds need even be exposed to fire or pass through the digestive tract of a bird in order to be able to germinate.
