Can someone please explain this one. I get that the NH2 is the most basic and will be the one protonated. But why does that cause it to come out in the aqueous layer? Why does adding HCl make the solution a 2 phase system?

Addition of acid changes a neutral R-NH2 group into a positive R-NH3+ group. The neutral group is organic soluble, the charged group is water soluble. This is a standard technique for the isolation of alkaloids.
The other compounds don't pick up a charge with the addition of acid.
