Is soaking my masonry tools in a mix of muriatic acid and water going to hurt them

So far after checking them a couple times it seems to be working. Is this at all weaking them at all or does the acid not affect the metal?I know I think one item(a cast aluminum line adjuster. Seems to be breaking down as if I touch it gets my hands all dirty.Hopefully everything else is fine. Id hate for them all to go to waste,......
I've got a bunch of masonry tools that need cleaning(mostly jointers, crusted on mortar. Some were mine, some are stuff I've found over the years from when I was doing cleanup for a masonry company) Amazing how lazy the masons are, don't go after the tools they drop at the end of the day. But fine by me, free stuff for me.

Well anyways I'd like to clean them up. Right now I have them soaking in a muriatic acid bath to break down the mortar. So far after checking them a couple times it seems to be working. Is this at all weaking them at all or does the acid not affect the metal?

Muriatic acid is an acid (hydrochloric acid, to be specific) and as such can attack metals, even when diluted. What you see on the aluminum tools is the effect of the acid.

Steel tools are being dissolved, too, but much more slowly. After treating them with any acid, give them a thorough rinse in water and dry them completely so they don't start to corrode again.

Muriatic acid is an obsolete alchemist's name for hydrochloric acid. Depends what the tools are made of and the concentration of the acid but my best guess is that it would be corrosive to mild steel stainless steel and most metal items.

If you keep doing this you will not have any tools to worry about. Also, Muratec acid can be very hard on your skin and cloths It is also battery acid , so.take care, and have lots of water handy to dilute a spill.

perhaps, instead, use the cheapest vinegar you can find - it contains the weak acid "acetic acid" - i would think it far less corrosive to the metals but still effective decomposing the cement

I'd use quite a weak mix, and do exactly what you are doing: checking them occasionally. Acid does dissolve metal, but muriatic acid works slowly on steel, so you should be able to get the cement off well before the steel is degraded. If you have aluminum tools, it will 'eat' them much too quickly. I would try to chip off as much cement as I could and leave them at that. You could also try a coarse abrasive paper if you wanted to remove more, or go carefully with grind stone on a dremel.
