Why can't nitric acid and hydrochloric acid be used?
-
HNO3 is an oxidising agent, so that can't be used.
HCl is oxidised by KMnO4 to chlorine gas, so that can't be used either.
And you can't use a weak acid like CH3COOH because it doesn't provide enough H+ ions.
