Why are ionic compounds good conductors when dissolved but not when solid

In a solution the electrons are free to migrate, but in a solid they are in bonds and not free to migrate. Metals are good conductors because metals lose electrons easily so they are free to migrate. Insulators do not lose electrons easily and they are not free to migrate.
