INORGANIC CHEMISTRY: Net Number and Molecular Formula

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-09-06] [Hit: ]
Net X atoms: ?Net Y atoms: ?Net Z atoms: ?Molecular Formula?-Each atom at a corner of the unit cell counts as 1/4 of an atom. Each atom on a face of a cube occupies (1/2 atom/face)(6 faces) = 3 atoms in the unit cell.......
Can someone please explain this to me?

A cubic lattice has the atom X at teach of the corners, Y on each face center, and Z on each edge center. Determine the NET NUMBER of each of these atoms in the cubic lattice. Also determine the MOLECULAR FORMULA.

Net X atoms: ?
Net Y atoms: ?
Net Z atoms: ?

Molecular Formula?

Each atom at a corner of the unit cell counts as 1/4 of an atom. Since there are 8 corners then (1/4 atom/corner)(8 corners) = 2 atoms total in the unit cell

Each atom on a face of a cube occupies (1/2 atom/face)(6 faces) = 3 atoms in the unit cell.

Each atom on the edge center of a cube will occupy (1/4 atom/edge)(12 edges) = 3 atoms in the unit cell.

This would give you a molecular formula of X2Y3Z3

Hope this is helpful to you. JIL HIR

But the answer is wrong! Atoms on the corner count ⅛ so it is XY3Z3 which is strange (not fcc). I usually leave questions for 3 h before answering, but I spotted this error immediately.
