It is exactly the same as in humans. Nostrils, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli are the structure through which the air pases when a horse inhales or exhales. Gas exchange occurs within the alveoli and capillary beds that surround the the alveoli. When the diaphragm flattens out, pressure inside the lungs is lower than the pressure outside so air rushes in. When the diaphragm relaxes, the pressure inside the lungs is higher than outside so the air rushes out. With in the blood, hemoglobin in the red blood cells carries the oxygen to the tissues. As the returns to the lungs, the carbon dioxide is carried along.
