Im doing an experiment about eggshells as fertilizer and i need to talk about how its molecular structure helps in that. And the function of the calcium that it contains... thanks : )

The shell is about 95% CaCO3 (calcium carbonate). The remaining 5% includes calcium phosphate and magnesium carbonate plus soluble and insoluble proteins. If ground to a powder to increase the exposed surfaces it is more readily available. CaCO3 also dissolves in vinegar into ions.
Calcium is involved in internal regulation and cell division. Calcium from the golgi is involved in microtubule movement between the aligned chromosomes and the spindles in mitosis.

Calcium is important because of the critical role it plays in the structure of cell walls. When leaves begin to grow Calcium is found only in the soluble pectins in the cell walls but as the leaf matures Ca was in the lignin bound regions that provide support. Calcium aids in stabilizing the cell wall.
