Mushrooms are the reproductive structures of an organism known as mycelium. They release spores from the gills below the cap. The spores then land on a suitable substrate which triggers them to begin growing. What comes out of the spore is a single cell-wide strand called mycelium. The mycelium branches out and forms a large root-like structure below the surface of the substrate. After the mycelium has covered enough nutritious substrate, it will form a mushroom on the outside, thus the process continues.
