Why would two pink flowers produce an F1 generation of red flowers, pink flowers ad white flowers

Because the alleles for flower color display incomplete dominance (ie. the individual with a heterozygote genotype displays a third phenotype).

FF - red
Ff - pink
ff - white

P: Ff x Ff

F1: 25% FF [red], 50% Ff [pink], 25% [white]
