What is the independent and the dependent variable in this experiment

we did an experiment that we compared respiration rate of plants vs animals. we determined the volume of each plant and animal, by water displacement.

im thinking dependent is respiration but im not sure about the independent.

The independent variable is the one that you manipulated yourself.
I guess that would be the volume of organism (plant or animal).
