Why would gametes be diploid if they underwent mitosis

mitosis produces daughter cells that contain the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell. so all cells would be diploid. Gametes actually undergo meiosis which is reduction division so the 4 daughter cells are haploid, not diploid.
