Hiccups are the result of spasms of the diaphragm. Most commonly, If the stomach is too full of gas or food, it contacts and stretches the diaphragm, which responds (like all muscles do) by contracting in a spasm. Sometimes, hiccups are the result of random stimulation of the phrenic nerve.

I don't know. But here's a hiccup cure that works for me every time:

Get a glass of water ready. Push all the air out of your lungs, and hold that for as long as you can, until you really, really feel like you need to take a breath. (You can walk around or something to speed this up.) Then, BEFORE you take a breath, drink a good amount of the water. When you breathe, your hiccups will be gone.

This is a trick that stage actors use if they get hiccups before a show. Since I found about it hiccups have never bothered me for long.

certain foods react with the Hydrochloric acid i think its called that is in your stomach and that reaction causes gas to come back up through the pharnyx and causes hiccups until the food is broken down

-
You get hiccups because your diaphragm is not in an equilibration and its trying to get back into its original rhythm
