Is immortality possible

The American lobster is immune to the inevitable weathering of time upon its organic edifice, only succumbing to death at the hands of injury or disease. However, I suppose you wish to gain information relevant to human immortality. Is immortality possible? Don't answer the question by saying " I don't know " or etc.

Explain why it's possible or why it's impossible.

Yes, in fact it exists in the animal kingdom at present. The American lobster is immune to the inevitable weathering of time upon its organic edifice, only succumbing to death at the hands of injury or disease. However, I suppose you wish to gain information relevant to human immortality. At present, the only theoretically plausible way to sustain human life indefinitely is to preserve the length of the telomeres present upon the tips of each chromosome. The telomere is involved in the process of cell replication. The inability of somatic cells to reproduce ultimately culminates in "natural" death, as the body cannot sustain its functions due to this mass apoptosis (cell death). This cell death manifests in a variety of ways, such as in certain types of cancers, type 2 diabetes, and atherosclerosis, among others. Oxidation is the mechanism by which the telomeres are degraded. When we breathe, a byproduct of single atom oxygen is produced that bombards the DNA of the telomeres, producing genetic mutations that ultimately present with the diseases mentioned. Thus, by using anti-oxidant therapeutics, one may prevent death, or at the very least, stall its advancement. Certainly, you won't become immortal by eating blueberries. But perhaps future drugs may unlock the mechanism by which to prevent oxidation altogether. It is only then, disregarding illness and injury, will humanity be able to achieve immortality; quite a scary concept for both society and the health care system if you ask me.

It probably is possible, but there's so much that needs to happen to get us to immortality. Curing cancer, regenerating body parts, keeping our environment clean for a long time so we aren't killed by incidental things, etc. All of these things are possible. The question isn't can immortality be reached, but will we figure out how to do it?
