It was NOT Sirius. It is the WRONG time of year for Sirius to be in that part of the sky. It was/is probably Venus. According to Stellarium, Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury are all morning stars. Mercury can be very bright, but the Sun is washing it out.

William say: You are seeing the scintillation of Sirius, the brightest star in the sky besides the Sun.

Scintillation is what causes "twinkling," and Sirius in particular can flash different colors in rapid succession in a transparent sky. Scintillation in caused by varying refraction in the atmosphere due to turbulence.

Others bright white stars scintillate in this manner but Sirius is notorious as the "multi-colored" sparkling star.
