Is a neighboring galaxy coming to our solar system soon?
I heard about it on this website Inverse. That it will cause danger to life on Earth.

answers:
aladdinwa say: In about 2 million years from now.
-
YKhan say: If "soon" is in billions of years, then yes.
-
中中 say: well! it may say the neighboring galaxy coming to the Milky Way,not coming to our solar system
like the Andromeda Galaxy, recently research also find the Large Magellanic Cloud(LMC)will crash to the Milky Way.
Will cause danger to life on Earth? Probably not(very little probability)
First it will happened after billion years, form now we just can simulate the Milky Way will crash into other galaxies, but no one really know what will happen at that time.
Second the galaxy is so large, make the distance between each star so far away, and the star in the galaxy is dominated by the core of the galaxy,so when the galaxy collide, our solar system will pass the event safely, also some research say our solar system will be throw to different place after the collision, but will not cause danger on Earth(if at that time still have the life existing on Earth).
So is a neighboring galaxy coming to our solar system? I may say coming to the Milky Way,and our solar system inside the Milky Way,and very little probability will cause danger to life on Earth.
Hope can help to resolve your doubt^^

nineteenthly say: No, it will take billions of years.

tham153 say: A fine example of the scientific illiteracy and sheer nonsense found on so much of the internet. The closest galaxy to ours, the Large Magellanic Cloud, is 160,000 light years away, so even if headed this way at light speed would not get here for 160,000 years. The Andromeda Galaxy is headed for a collision in about 4 billion years, but galaxies (including ours) are mostly empty space, so a collision is more like two crowds passing one another.
And why with 7 other planets, half a dozen dwarf planets, and nearly 200 moons would Earth be especially singled out I such a collision were threatening?
-
Ronald 7 say: Andromeda will merge with the Milky Way some day, Trillions of years in the future
Given the vast distances between planets, never mind Stars, collisions will be highly unlikely and the Merge will also take trillions of years
The "Milkomeda" Galaxy will probably become an Elliptical Galaxy
-
Jeffrey K say: No galaxy or star or solar system will come anywhere near us any time soon. Probably never.
-
Gordon B say: I think its millions or billions of years, soon by universe standards but not worth expecting to see by our standards. Milky way and Andromeda are on a collision course but they are likely to just merge with little damage to either
-
Roger K say: The earth may not even exist by that time, if the sun advances far enough into its red giant stage.
Humans will certainly have gone extinct LONG before the two galaxies pass through each other.
Nothing at all to worry about.
-
oldprof say: Andromeda is the nearest galaxy and, yes, it's on a collision course with our galaxy, the Milky Way.
But fear not, the two galaxies are still billions of years away from actually merging. So you don't need to worry about it.
-
Erica s say: Only if you count "soon" as between 4 and 6 billion years. Don'y worry about it.
-
ngc7331 say: You've got some time. The Andromeda Galaxy isn't expected for another 1,000,000,000 (billion) years. It's still about 2,400,000 light years away.
-
say: Yeah if it folds it may. But different dimensions are already colliding with Earth. We'd meet new lifeforms.
-
Tom S say: No.
-
quantumclaustrophobe say: Not to our particular solar system, but the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy will begin to merge at about the time the sun begins to die.
-
Nyx say: In roughly 3 to 4 billion years.
Which is about the same time the sun goes red giant, and melts the inner solar system.
But not to worry, Earth's atmosphere will be stripped away in about a billion years.
-
oyubir say: Do you see a galaxy coming to us in the sky?
If you don't, that means you are fine for a while.
Galaxy are huge. Even if one was bigger than the Moon in the sky, it would still be very far. And for now, the galaxy we can see can't be distinguish from a star (they just look like a dot) to the naked eye.
So, bottom line: no, as you can see yourself.
Second point: "galaxy coming to our solar system"?
You must realize how small and insignificant is our solar system compared to a galaxy. It is not like a galaxy could "enter" the solar system.
In fact, a galaxy is so huge, that we could cross one unharmed... Chance are we would never be close enough to any of its star to suffer consequence.
So, I've said "size of the moon in the sky". But even if the galaxy was the size of the sky in the sky, it would not be automatically a disaster (the greater danger, I think, would be the fact that some stars of our galaxy, or of the other one, might be ejected and pass close enough to have gravitational effect, or radiation effect, etc.
So, second bottom line: no, and even if it were, it is not like a car crash.
-
BJ say: In 4 billion years from now the andromida galaxy will collide with our milky way so i don't think it's something we should worry about
-
John say: BULLSHIIIIIT
-
Bone Alone say: In about 2 billion years.
-
poldi2 say: No, a neighboring galaxy is not coming to our solar system ever.
The Andromeda Galaxy and our Milky Way galaxy are on a course that will bring them within each other's gravitational influence in a few billion years.
-
Hindusufi say: In about 2 billion years the Large Magellanic Cloud will collide with the Milky Way. About 4 billion years for the same with the Andromeda galaxy. Long after life has ended on earth in both cases. You need to understand the difference between a galaxy and a solar system, look them up.
-
Alpha Beta say: Not for many many millions of years from now
-
Jack say: Depends on your definition of "soon". I'm certainly not losing any sleep over it.
-
Remy say: probably
-
Bill-M say: Yes but not soon. A few million years away. So don't worry about it.
