The current understanding is that there is only one known sample set of life in the universe and that is the scenario we must currently stand by. Many possibilities may be true, but unless you're going to use the scientific process to determine them, then there is nothing to be achieved by discussing it.
Speculation is free and easy. It's a vital tool for creating hypotheses, but speculation also has it's limits. No amount of wishing for something can will it into existence. The belief that there is the "potential" for extraterrestrial life is widespread in the scientific community, and sensibly so because the probabilities are good. Unless you are actively engaged in the very difficult and expensive task of looking for the signs of this exolife using observation and exploration then speculation is all you have. It's still a sum that adds up to 0.
Science is a dynamic, progressional process so if the search pays off and evidence does change then we will all begin to accept the existence of alien life as a fact. However - that won't be an opportunity for anyone to say "See, I told you so! There are aliens!" because they didn't know s**t. They were just the people rash enough to take the option in a 50/50 choice that wasn't backed up by knowledge or evidence.
