Take the cap off the end of the telescope . ./ There's reason WHY telescopes come with instruction manuals., and they usually are available online as well. Now you know why most telescopes end up in attics and garages and basements. Many people just do not have the PATIENCE using a telescope requires.

Mercury and Mars have probably already set. Jupiter probably is above your horizon, IF it is night where you are,l but if your sky is overcast like mine is, and it is also raining where I am, stay inside..

Dump the liberals into Jupiter say: Telescopes work best at NIGHT.

Especially when the sky is CLEAR.

Make sure that the telescope is placed OUTSIDE.

Take the lens cap OFF.

Point the telescope in some generally UPWARD direction.

Be sure that you are looking through the LITTLE END.

You should see something or other. If you are hoping to see some PARTICULAR OBJECT, then things get a little more complicated. You might need a STAR ATLAS and a PLANETARY EPHEMERIS as helpful aids.

Starrysky say: Join an astro club for expert help or look with Google for tips on line.
If you have a smart phone with GPS and gyro, you can get an app for starfield and other objects like moon, planet finders. Fasten to telescope with a clamp you can buy on line. Then you can move the scope as you watch on the smart phone screen. That will tell you what it is pointed at.

m say: take off the lens caps.
-
Nyx say: Helps if you state what type of telescope you have - Refractor, or reflector.
and what sort of mount it has - Alt-Az, or equatorial.

And if you aligned the finderscope to the main scope, by looking at a distant object during the day amd match up the views.

Plus a few other tips.

D g say: You look through a lower magnification to aim then change the eyepiece to larger magnification .. also note you want a large opening.. large opening means a lot of light gets in these types of telescopes have generally a small magnification lens setup for finding the object once found in that scope the better image can be seen in the large telescope.

johnismyrealname say: go to a place with clear skys
-
roger say: did you take the lens cap off?
-
Choose a bloody best answer. It's not hard. say: You're not giving away much. What exactly have you tried doing, and with what have you tried it?
