then how could it ever return its survey data? It couldnt hope to generate enough power to transmit a signal we have any chance of hearing. This needs technology we just dont have in any form. It could take centuries to be a reality. More likely millennia.-PhotonX say: No,......

Or about 762,397.4 years to get out there. That's a bit of a schlep.
-
OwlBear say: Eventually, but we don't have the technology to do that yet. They're too far away.
-
Innocent Victim say: NASA does not have the capability to send probes that far.
-
Davros say: Even if we were patient enough to wait the thousands of years needed for the probe to make it's way to the system, and if by some miracle the probe manages to survive the journey in working order, then how could it ever return it's survey data? It couldn't hope to generate enough power to transmit a signal we have any chance of hearing.

This needs technology we just don't have in any form. It could take centuries to be a reality. More likely millennia.

PhotonX say: No, of course not. You don't seem to grasp how far away TRAPPIST-1 is. As others say, even such a nearby star is so far away that any probe launched today wouldn't arrive until the human race is likely extinct. Here, chew on this to get an idea of distances just within the Solar System, and then try to imagine what it would be like to travel to another star: http://joshworth.com/dev/pixelspace/pixe...

Zardoz say: If we wait a few tens of thousands of years we'll be able to develop a probe that can get there before one that we send today.
-
Acetek say: Nope. It would take something like 712,000 years to get there with our current technology. They will have to wait until we develope a stardrive in a 100 years or so
