There are 8 major planets.
Eris, Ceres and Pluto are dwarf planets. Eris is bigger than Pluto. There are 2 other dwarf planets we have strong evidence for, and our computer models of the solar system predict that there are likely several hundred dwarf planets in the Kuiper belt and possibly several thousand in the Oort cloud. Some astronomers claim that there are 9 now 'known' dwarf planets, although not all astronomers agree. They expect that there will be roughly 50 of these in the Solar System discovered in the next several decades.
