There are no known comets or asteroids or other objects expected to impact the Earth in the future, but astronomers continue to search, observe and calculate orbits to monitor any objects which are likely to collide with Earth.
Same kind of discussion applies about any other "reason" for it.
Given all the above, I recommend the following:
1. Don't run up your credit cards and other debts expecting that you won't have to pay them back after December 2012.

I don't believe the Mayans predictions are wrong,. What's wrong is the interpretation of those predictions. The Mayans NEVER predicted a PHYSICAL end to the world. What they predicted was the METAPHORICAL end of one KINGDOM (one long count calendar cycle) AND THE METAPHORICAL BEGINNING of new kingdom. The metaphorical end of the cultural world started with the either the 1982 declaration of bankruptcy of the Penn Square bank in Oklahoma City (savings and loan crisis) or the 1997 dot.com but, and the change accelerated with the 2008 United States presidential election. POLITCS has changed RADICALLY. Former Southern Democrats are now Republicans, and many are TEA PARTY Republicans.

Their prediction were only about things like when the next eclipse will occur.
They made NO predictions about the future, specifically about some doomsday.
