There is no if. The space shuttles have already been retired. All shuttles are either already at museums, or being prepped to be sent to a museum. Currently NASA is sending its astronauts up with the Russians on Soyuz capsules to get to the space station. NASA is currently still developing the Orion Multi-purpose Crew Vehicle as a shuttle replacement. It's a variation on the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle that was supposed to take us back to the Moon, before Obama cancelled the program.

The next generation of heavy launch vehicles, which are being built right now. NASA decided on a design and contracted Lockheed to build it those vehicles THREE MONTHS AGO. The Shuttles were meant and constructed to be used ONLY in Low Earth Orbits. Do you keep sinking money into repairing a 30 year old or more car be replacing the engine and the transmission and the electrical system AND THE PAINT JOB every one thousand to 5000 miles, or do you sell/retire the 30 year old car to some one who wants to restore and maintain it? That's what NASA did, except it donated four shuttles to four museums after taking the salvageable, still usable components of the Shuttles out of the Shuttles.

What do you mean, "if"? The US space shuttles *ARE* retired. The last flight landed on July 21, 2011.
We use Russian rockets now, and will for many years.

The Shuttles ARE retired, and we've been hitching rides with the Russians until we get a new alternative.
-
Well, whatever it is, I hope they don't have a woman "commander" who emasculates the crew and turns them into wimps before the spacecraft even takes off.
-
The next vehicle to be used will be a Russian shuttle (maybe a capsule). I think it has been named as Ares 1.

uhhh a different shuttle... they retire shuttles and use new ones. like right now we use some russian thing
