The evidence came from Edwin Hubble, who showed that the apparent speed of recession of distant galaxies was 'linear' (the speed varied directly as a function of the distance: twice as far = twice as fast -- seven times as far = seven times as fast).

Monsignor Georges Henri Joseph Édouard Lemaître (or just Father Lemaitre), a priest who was also a university professor and a mathematician, used this evidence to show that space was expanding.

However, he did not provide evidence for the expansion of the UNIVERSE, as we do not yet know if the universe itself is expanding. Space is expanding.

Einstein did not believe that space could expand, but Father Lemaitre went to visit him and, after the visit, Einstein removed a factor he had put in his equations to prevent the mathematical model to predict the expansion of space.

Edwin Hubble, he proved using the Red Shift method. The farther the object the greater the Red Shift in light.
