List 10 people to colonize Mars (5 stars for best answer)

I have a project to make a civilization on Mars. I need 10 people to go up there first. Which person depending on their job would go?

You need people that can create and support a colony:
- geologist (I guess it would be an areologist on Mars)
- chemist
- medical doctor
- physicist
- mechanical engineer
- communications/computer specialist
- atmospheric scientist
- toxicologist
- city planner
- administrative project leader

That's an awfully small colony to start with, more like an extended stay. If you're going found a colony, you need to have a wider diversity of genetic material (mating stock) to help keep down any genetic problems arising from inbreeding. I'd go with 100 people, at least. Even then you would need people the have multiple skill sets in order to get the colony just started. Also, a larger crew means more depth of coverage in skill sets. With 10 people, you loose one person - that's 10% of your colony. With 100 people, a 10% loss for the colony is 10 people

You would need not only administrative staff, but medical people, geologists, agronomic and environmental specialists, machinists, plumbers, surveyors, folks with mechanical, electrical and troubleshooting skills. And much more.

Then you have to bring everything with your to start out. Assume that Mars has nothing to offer you in the way of resources, other then a place to pitch a shelter. Then you need to worry about spare parts (things do break), building equipotent and supplies, power, waste reclamation along with water and food stuffs. Not to mention all those homey touches we like to have around us.

What you might consider is having a landing party / construction crew and the colony. The construction crew would help build the basic infrastructure of the colony and make sure that everything is working. Then they leave. The colonists then finish up whatever needs done and settle in to make a go of it.
