I heard that before the big bang, the universe was infinitely dense and hot and squished into that of a singularity. Then when the big bang occurred the energy was released and converted into matter. But how did the energy exist in the first place? Also, the universe had to take up space even though it was squished into a singularity. Does that mean space existed before the universe? I mean, space doesn't create itself and neither does energy. Also if the universe is expanding, does that mean it creates space while it is expanding? So hard to UNDERSTAND

Answer that and u will be the most famous human on Earth. Religious folks who believe in science say God made the big bang. A super natural event does seem to be the only way that all of this matter and energy could have come into existence.
If u don't believe in God then u will probably never find a satisfying answer. I've heard hypotheses, but there is no shred of proof, they are merely hypotheses.
Also the universe didn't always exist. That was a theory back in the mid to early 1900's. It was called the Steady State Theory and it was completely disproved by the discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation in 1965.

Very hard to understand, which is why nobody knows yet. Perhaps there was nothing before the big bang. Perhaps something can come from nothing given infinite time when the laws of the universe do not yet exist? I believe we have seen spontaneous creation recently, although on a quantum level. As for expansion, think of the universe, space, as a balloon expanding. It's all there from the start, there is not more balloon being made, it is just being "stretched" out.

We don't know what was before the big bang.
Yet.
Yes, the Universe essentially makes space as it expands. It does it by expanding within itself instead of moving against a boundary.

I believe the universe never had a start, just always existed
