Some cosmologists, (including names such as Professor S Hawkins, R Penrose, N. Turok and P. Steinhardt) think that there was a pre-big bang state.
The details of which are debatable, and currently theoretical. Future tests and observations on the CBR, black holes, and gravitational waves will confirm, or deny, their theories.
One cyclic model of the Universe says that our universe 'budded off' from the space time of a 'parent' universe, with our universe inheriting its 'fine tuning' from the previous parent universe.
Another variation to the theory says that our universe arose from the 'resetting' of two 5-dimensional membranes that had hosted a previous universe.
The main differences (to these two main theories) are that the temporal dimension may or may not extend beyond the Big-bang event (ie one universe or many separate universes); however, a common feature to all the theories is that generally the underlying spatial dimensions of our universe can be extended (increasing or decreasing in numbers depending on which theory you choose) beyond the Big-bang event.

My personal view is that the 'time dimension' is just a spatial dimension, and that the underlying structure of the universe are membranes. Before the big bang there existed just two 5-dimensional membranes.

No one is really sure what came before, but one of the more respects and accepted possibilities is that before the big bang and the afterbirth of the universe, everything was just a void. A void is a space containing absolutely nothing, no matter, no light, no time and without end.

A reason that this is an accepted answer is due to the rule of opposites, where in order for there to be balance things must be composed of two opposing sides. So in order for there to be a Universe, there has to be the exact opposite which happens to be a void, which pretty represents the opposite of existence.
