The maths just doesn't add up

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-05-02] [Hit: ]
Speed of Light = 3.1 light year= 9.Size of Universe = 4.Time = Distance/speed = 4.35 x 10^26 m/3.00 x 10^8 ms-1 = 1.......
So i was doing a bit of background research and I suddenly realised that this doesn't add up... am I doing something wrong or have I defined physics!?

Speed of Light = 3.00 x 10^8 ms-1
1 light year = 9.5 x 10^15 m
Size of Universe = 4.35 x 10^26 m (observable)

Speed = Distance/Time
Time = Distance/speed
= 4.35 x 10^26 m/3.00 x 10^8 ms-1
= 1.45 x 1018 s
= 4.6 x 10^10 years for light to travel to the edge of the observable universe to us

Which is longer than the age of the universe (1.3 x 10^10 yers)!!
So are we dedecting stuff from before the big bang? or am i just being stupid?
thanks

But you have assumed a constant size of the universe.

As the universe is receding from us (relatively speaking) light will surly take longer than expected to reach us?

I don't understand your question here. Your answer is 13 000 000 000 years. And as we know, the universes age is about 13 700 000 000 years. But this might have happened because you rounded some numbers. I see no errors nowhere.

You really do have too much time on your hands.

Na mte you'vedefo got the right answer

The universe went through a period of inflation early on in which it expanded faster than the speed of light. While matter can't move faster than light, space can. That's why the universe is larger than you'd expect from thinking it was expanding at a constant rate. It isn't.
