In the next few years we will see larger than normal Solar Storms.
Unfortunatly the people who supply electricity don't care as much as we do about supply.
Haveing said that, it will be very hard and expensive to avoid total disruption of supply anyway.
But that does not mean they could not do something before it happens, but they won't.
Imagine if they knew that a Solar Storm was going to knock out supply and burn up transformers etc.
Do you think they would turn off power to protect the grid ?. NO NO NO.
They are more scared of being SUED by the outcome of that action. Deaths and other diruptions to transport etc.
A 1973 magnetic storm caused severe disruptions to Earth's electric grid, plunging six million people into darkness in Canada's eastern-central Quebec province.
Back to the DARK AGES again. I better stop writing because I will keep on going.

I remember that March 1989 power failure. I live in Quebec.
When Hydro-Quebec blamed a solar storm as the cause of the failure, nobody here believed them. It was quite a joke. It took a lot of convincing on the part of Hydro-Quebec before people stopped laughing.

Solar maximum is next year; An high class solar flare could cause power grids to be destroyed in the northern hemisphere.

when a pole shift occurs it can shut down the magnetic field around the earth, so if a solar flare occured.. wherever is hit would be in deep trouble.

Well, if the solar storm in February this year and August last year didn't cause any trouble, not sure that one in 2013 will be a problem.
