Another point to add on to his is that while mammary glands are a characteristic of mammals, so is hair. Even mammals which live in the water tend to have hair on their bodies; dolphins and manatees, not positive on whales, but they produce milk.

You'd have to call them unique critters along with Echidnas who have found themselves lost in the timewarp of multiple sex chromosomes.

It is still a mammal. They are called monotremes which are mammals that lay eggs. Also in this group are the echidnas.
