How is an LCD screen measured

I know it is measured from left corner to right corner but what about horizontal and vertical size? if i say 5 inch LCD then what should be its horizontal and vertical size?

if its 5 inches diagnal, then the horizontal and vertical are 3 and 4...

LCD and plasma screens are measured diagonally from the top left OF THE VIEWING SCREEN, to bottom right of the viewing screen.

The old CRT television sets are measured diagonally from top left to bottom right OF THE ENTIRE BOX.

For the same diagonal measure, LCD and Plasma screens are bigger.

The size in inches that you normally see is the diagonal measurement.

Most montiors and TVs sold today are 16:9 (older ones are 4:3)

So if you wanted to find the height and width of a 5" 16:9 TV, you can set up a triangle and solve with pythagarean theorm.

unknown height = 9x
unknown width = 16x
diagonal distance = 5"

a² + b² = c²
(9x)² + (16x)² = 5²
81x² + 256x² = 25
337x² = 25
x² = 25 / 337
x² = 0.07418
x = 0.2723

16x = 16 * 0.2723 = 4.3658"
9x = 9 * 0.2723 = 2.4507"

That would be the height and width of the display screen of a 5" display.

Actually, it's measured along the diagonal from top left to bottom right.
So you also need to know whether it is widescreen or not - whether it's 4:3 or 16:9 or 16:10

Depends on the aspect ratio. 16:9 is a common one. 16in width, 9in height. Or a variance of that ratio.

You would have to figure that out manually by using a little trig knowledge or good ol' SohCahToa! Make a triangle bisecting the corner and then the rest is up to you!

Most TV's use a 16" by 9" format, so it should be some pair of numbers in that proportion.
