This is not the case.
Susskind applied M Theory and showed that if M Theory was correct the information about the matter that fell into the black hole would be preserved as a hologram on the Event Horizon.
The universe is thought to be a black hole, so all the information about the universe would be stored as a hologram on the edge surface of the universe.

Do black holes destroy the information about the particles that cross the Event Horizon? If information is lost then entropy increases, if entropy increases then temperature increases to billions of degrees C according to General Relativity. But, quantum mechanics says that it cannot happen.
