Inertia means the inability of matter to change its state of motion OR rest on its own i.e., without external force / interference. So matter will stay at rest or continue to be in motion if this state is not interrupted by external force. And that is exactly what the Newton's first law of motion states. Hence it is also called the law of inertia!

Whether or not you realize it, some of the car's energy is absorbed by the rotating parts in the car (wheels, axles) as well as external forces (wind). If that car was in space, far away from any other object and moving in a straight line, Newton's first law, the law of inertia says that car will remain moving in a straight line, at a constant speed, in the same direction, forever until it comes in contact with some other object or force (the gravity of a nearby planet or a collision with an asteroid, etc.) At that point, the direction, and/or velocity (or speed) of the car would change, thereby altering its inertia.
