Why Newton s first law of motion is also known as law of inertia

Inertia means the inability of matter to change its state of motion OR rest on its own i.e., without external force / interference. So matter will stay at rest or continue to be in motion if this state is not interrupted by external force. And that is exactly what the Newton's first law of motion states. Hence it is also called the law of inertia!

Newton's first law states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.Inertia is the property of matter by which it retains its state of rest or its velocity along a straight line so long as it is not acted upon by an external force. This law is also called law of inertia because it explains us the meaning of inertia as is obvious.

The concept that, in a closed system, an object will retain its movement and mass unless it is acted upon (or exchanges energy with) another object is called inertia.

Imagine you are in a car, driving on a flat road, and the engine gives out. The vehicle will maintain its speed for some time before eventually stopping. Whether or not you realize it, some of the car's energy is absorbed by the rotating parts in the car (wheels, axles) as well as external forces (wind). If that car was in space, far away from any other object and moving in a straight line, Newton's first law, the law of inertia says that car will remain moving in a straight line, at a constant speed, in the same direction, forever until it comes in contact with some other object or force (the gravity of a nearby planet or a collision with an asteroid, etc.) At that point, the direction, and/or velocity (or speed) of the car would change, thereby altering its inertia.
