I asked a question about butterflys & was told they got that way because of genetics. I am asking because I was in a group that believes you just think positive & there is no use of asking how life began. I don't want to believe in the God of religions so I am looking for whatever it is that people who say Science has the answers belief in.

Bottom Line: Something or someone has always existed.
God has always existed
Spacetime has always existed.
Both, statements are equally valid. Given either the universe can be built "from the ground up."

Given Spacetime, Vacuum Energy and/or a Quantum Fluctuation could have kicked-off the Big Bang.

Butterflys: Animals (including insects) need to do 3 things:
Eat
Avoid being eaten
Make more creatures like themselves
Anything that helps them do the first 2, will allow them to do more of the 3rd thing.
Do more of the 3rd thing and the creatures like you replace those that are not like you. If you are just a little different (and all things are) that difference may allow your offspring to survive a little better and do more of the 3rd thing.
Wing color helps with #1 and/or #2: Camouflage. Make you look like something else that does not taste good, fights well, is poisonous, or makes you attractive to members of your species of the opposite sex.
A good wing color can save your life or get you a mate. Either way, the world gets more things like you.
