E = Mc^2
Everything in the universe is made from energy.
Matter is just highly concentrated energy
That highly concentrated energy is in the form of sub-atomic particles
The 4 Fundemental Forces of Nature ( gravity, electro-magnetism, weak nuclear force, strong nuclear force) are carried by particles called Messenger Particles. Messenger Particles are made from energy too
The progression looks like this:
Quarks===> protons & neutrons (electrons are a special case)===> atoms (matter)
The Femions including electrons seem to start where the Quarks start
So what makes the Messenger Particles, Quarks, and Femions? When you take energy and matter apart to see what they are made of, what is the smallest part that cannot be taken apart and how do we describe their behavior Mathamaticly?
String Theory / M-Theory says that the last smallest piece is a tiny vibrating loop of energy that can be described perfectly by the equations of vibrating strings. Just as a single string can produce an infinite number of sounds, a String can vibrate in an infinate number of ways. So by changing how a String vibrates we can make all energy, matter, and forces of nature from this one simple structure.
But, we pay a price for that simplicity: the math gets very complicated and gives strange results as possibilities. One result of that complexity is that a geometry of 11 dimensions is needed to describe the Spacetime of Strings
So, where are the 7 dimensions beyond the 4D Spacetime we are aware of? Wound up an tiny stacks roughly 6*10^-34 m in diameter Far to small for us to be aware of. Those stacks of dimensions exist at every point in Spacetime.
