It actually scales the distance down by some factor. For example, if a car is 40 ft from your mirror, it will appear 30 ft from your mirror if the scale factor is .75, just like a car 10 feet from your mirror will appear 7.5 feet. If the distance is 0, However, you create a singularity and get sucked through the mirror like a black hole and come out into another world somewhere. The only way out is to find the new-found world's equivelant to mirrors and repeat the same process. Hopefully, you will pop out in the world you started in. The world that you teleport to is determined by the scale factor o the mirror.

You're finger goes through the mirror to a fifth dimension, which is often confused with the fourth dimension. The fourth dimension is a lot like the labyrinth from the movie with David Bowie. The fifth dimension is the whole world and everything in it, except flipped inside-out. Or outside-in, depending on your perspective. If we could use every part of our brain, we could transport our bodies into that fifth dimension. But until NZT becomes mainstream, we will only know the legends of the fifth dimension.
