there is the distance display which is measured in miles in most cases and then there is the speed. is the speed measured in mph or just a rating like1-10 or what?

The "distance" is the length of belt passing under your feet (the distance you would have walked/ run in a straight line over ground, disregarding time), while the "speed" is the rate at which the belt passes underfoot in 1 hour, or the distance you would have walked in 1 hour in a straight line over ground.
