A friend of mine explained to me why we can't just take pure GABA. It was a complex answer but it had something to do with the neurotransmitter being digested or up taken by the body before it hit the necessary neuro receptor.

The reason why oral GABA is inactive is a different reason than why DMT is inactive
GABA is inactive orally because it cannot cross the Blood-brain barrier. You would have to take modified GABA like Phenibut or Picamilon.
The reason DMT is generally inactive orally is because it gets broken down during digestion through monoamine oxidase. Technically you can still consume it orally to get the effects you would just need to consume quite a bit, or consume it with either a Selective MAO-A Inhibitor, or a non-selective MAO inhibitor.

It's because of the chemical monoamine oxidase inhibitor, which is found in the digestive tract. Unless you ingest hundreds of milligrams of DMT then this enzyme will break it all down before it has a chance to reach the serotonin receptors in your brain and take action.
