I need two people from my house to help with this math problem. I have to have the way they solved it, and there answer. And then i have to write a report on how they solved it, and the method they used. But no one in my house can do it and my friend is in a lower math then me so she can't solve it. .-. i need two people to do this. you're methods of figuring it out cannot be the same. Please this is urgent. I need to do the report within the next 2 days.
Here's the problem.
i have 20 coins
It's only pennies and nickels.
and the total is 48 cents.
Thank you! (:

Find out first how many 5s (nickles) can go into 48.
48 divided by 5 equals 9, with three 1s (pennies) left over.
9 nickles plus 3 pennies equals 48 cents, but only 12 coins.
The 20 coins you need, minus the 12 coins you have means you need 8 more coins.
Remove two nickles (10 cents) and add 10 pennies (also 10 cents) in their place.
10 coins (pennies you added) minus 2 coins (nickles you took away) equals 8 coins.
You now have 7 nickles and 13 pennies, which equals 20 coins.
7 X 5 = 35. 13 X 1 = 13. 35 + 13 = 48.
I hope that helps. :)

Let x rep # of pennies
Let 20 - x rep # of nickels
Take x multiply by 1c and 20 - x and multiply by 5c where your total equals 48c.
1(x) + 5(20 -x) = 48
x + 100 - 5x = 48
-4x = -52
x = 13
x = # of pennies, thus 13 pennies
20 - x = # of nickels thus 20 - 13 = 7 nickels
Well thanks Rob you have two ways :)

Let the nickels be x
Then the no of pennies will be 20 - x
Value = 5x + 1(20-x) = 48
5x + 20 -x = 48
4x = 28
x = 7
ANSWER 7 nickels and 13 pennies
Then the no of pennies will be 20 - x
Value = 5x + 1(20-x) = 48
5x + 20 -x = 48
4x = 28
x = 7

48/5 = 9 nickles, 3 pennies = 12 coins.
you need 8 more coins... so take away 2 nickles and add 10 pennies
13 pennies + 7 nickles = 20 coins = 48 cents
