ok. in my old school, the taught us to reduce and then, if improper, male it an mixed fraction. now, they show to leave it as in improper fraction. what should i do you guys?

Leave it as an improper fraction. Mixed numbers aren't used often when dealing with Algebra

That's easy. Do it the way your CURRENT teacher wants it, otherwise you'll lose points.
On Yahoo!Answers, which doesn't lend itself to displaying math, I leave it as an improper fraction, otherwise may be misread. For example, 2 1/2 may be misinterpreted as 21/2 or 2∙1/2.
5/2 is safer (although I may add parentheses for clarity).
I prefer decimals to fractions.
