I am about to take a class on mathematical optimization from the math department. The prereq is one semester of linear algebra (half computation, half proofs) with a C which is what I have. The book that we are using Bertsimas' Introduction to Linear Programming

Mathematical economics, business, Game Theory, to name a few. I even heard someone mention astronomy.
The goal is to maximize or minimize something with respect to certain constraints. If you're playing a game, you want to minimize your losses and/or maximize your winnings. If you're a banker or a business owner, you want to minimize your costs, max your profits, etc.
