Can you help converting fractions into decimals and vice versa

My kid is stuck on her homework, and I am not very smart with Maths myself. Please help us to understand how to achieve these conversions.

1. Express 35 as a decimal fraction of 56.
I thought of simplifying the numbers but I could not get a decimal fraction. I am completely clueless here...

2. £0.80 = €1. How many euro would you get for £40?
I thought it could be €32, but I am not sure of my result.

1. 35/56 = (5*7)/(8*7) = 5/8 = 0.625.
2. 40 pounds * (1 euro / 0.80 pounds) = 40 / 0.8 = 50 euros.

1. as in the decimal of 35/56 ?? If yes, then you would simplify it to 5/8 (7 goes into both). To get the decimal value, you divide 5 by 8, giving you 0.625

For the future, say you were given 0.625 and had to make it a fraction, you would find out the place of the 5 (tenth, hundredth, thousandth). Since it's int he thousandths place(1/1000), you would put 625 over 1000 (625/1000) and reduce.

2. you would do (£/€) = (£/€) so,

[ (£.8) / (€1) ] = [ (£40) / (x) ]

Then cross multiply

(£.8)(€x) = (€1)(£40)
(€x)(£.8)/(£40) = €1
(€x)(32) = €1

1) 35/ 56 = (5 * 7) / (7 * 8) so you can remove a factor of 7 from both the numerator and the denominator

35/56 = 5/8 Now you either use a calculator or do the long division to get a decimal equivalence.


2) use proportions or ratios to set this up

0.8 / 40 = 1 / x Cross multiply

0.8 x = 40 divide by 0.8

x = 40/0.8 = 50

35/56=.625 I used a calculator you could reduce it to 5/8 then divide 5/8 you would get the same decimal. all you are doing is dividing that's what / means.

35/56 = 5/8
