Why don't you add 10 in the simple Algebra problem

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-03-07] [Hit: ]
but instead of adding 10 to 100, you are eliminating the negative 10.When you are doing the inverse operation, you are only supposed to add 10 to each side once,m=9.But to save yourself a ton of trouble,......
10m = 100 - 10

I thought you had to 'even' both sides out by doing the inverse operation, so I did this:

10m+10 = 100+10
10m+10 = 110
10m-10 = 110-10
10m = 100
m = 10

This answer is wrong though, and the correct one is 9. Please help me understand this, and thanks.

You have the right idea, but instead of adding 10 to 100, you are eliminating the negative 10.

10m= 100-10

When you are doing the inverse operation, you are only supposed to add 10 to each side once, so you end up with

10 + 10m = 100 (adding 10 the right side eliminates -10)

Do the inverse again you get 10m=90

m=9.

But to save yourself a ton of trouble, the first thing you want to do is simplify the problem

Start from 10m = 100 - 10

First simply subtract 10 from 100

10m = 90

Second, your going to want 'm' all by itself, and the inverse of muliplication (10 x m) is division. So divide 10 by both sides

m = 9.

Always simplify your answers as best you can before looking for a variable

-
10m+10 = 100 - 10
10m+10 = 90
(subtracting 19 from both side)
10m = 80
(dividing both sides by 10)
m = 8

pretty sure 9 isnt the right answer but good luck - cheers :P

If 10m = 100 - 10,
then 10m = 90.
Divide both sides by 10: m = 90/10
to get m = 9

-
10m=100-10
10m=90
m=9

-
Maybe100-10=90 so 90/10M=9
