to the nearest millimeter.Does anyone know how to explain this using pythagoras theorem eg.) (h2=a2+b2)??-the pythagorean theorem says that the square of the length of two sides of a triangle (a2+b2) equals the square of the longest side of the triangle.when a piece of wood is put against a wall,......
A length of wood is to be used to brace a rectangular wall.
If the wall measures 5 metres by 8 metres, find the length
of the brace, to the nearest millimeter.
Does anyone know how to explain this using pythagoras theorem eg.) (h2=a2+b2)??

the pythagorean theorem says that the square of the length of two sides of a triangle (a2+b2) equals the square of the longest side of the triangle.

when a piece of wood is put against a wall, it forms a triangle. This means 5 and 8 are the two smaller sides of the triangle. square 5 and 8 and add them together. 25+64 = 89

now we have the longest side length squared. to find the actual length, square root it to get around 9.434 metres as the length of the wood

Assuming the "brace" is the hypotenuse, and makes a triangle with the 5m and 8m lengths.
You use the Pythagorean Theorem as so:

h^2=a^2 + b^2
h=sqrt(a^2 + b^2)
h=sqrt(5^2 + 8^2)
h=sqrt(25+64)
h=sqrt(89)m

If the brace is to stiffen the board it wll lie cornor to cornor across the board.
The edge of the board are the legs of a right angled triangle and the brace is the hypotenuse.
To find the length apply Pythagoras' formula
sqrt((5^2) + (8^2)) = 9.434
