Please explain fractions in dummy terms!!
I know if the Denominator doesn't match you would have to find the LCD. And this apply to Adding and Subtracting fractions.
5/12 + 17/60
common denominator is 60
5/12 12x5= 60
17/60= 60
5/12+17/60= 5/60+17/60
Now this is were i get confused.. do i have to multiply how many times 12 went into 60 with the numerator? 12x5=60 5x5=25 so it would be 25/60 + 17/60 = 42/60 then reduce to lowest terms?

Both fractions need to have the same denominator.
In this case, you'd multiply 12 by 5 to give 60 ... but you have to multiply both the top AND the bottom of the fraction by the same number. So we can say ...
5/12 = 25/60
Now the original sum becomes 25/60 + 17/60 = 42/60
–––––––––––––––––––
Step 2: can we simplify 42/60 ??
Well, 42 = 6 x 7
... and 60 = 6 x 10
So divide top and bottom of 42/60 by 6:
42/60 = 7/10
–––––––––––––––––––
Here's the whole sum the way your teacher wants to see it :)
5/12 + 17/60
= 25/60 + 17/60
= 42/60
= 7/10

If you find a common denominator you have to multiply the numerator too or your answer will be wrong, so it should be 25/60+17/60 and the answer should be 42/60 which can be reduced. So you got the answer right, but you forgot to multiply the 5/12.
