Math help: What is the remainder when 2x^2-6x+2 is divided by x+5

Substitute -5 into 2x² - 6x + 2
That's 50 - -30 + 2 = 82.
The remainder is 82.

There is two ways of finding this answer: long division and synthetic division, but synthetic division is usually simpler, so I'll explain how I got the answer that way.

Only numbers are used in synthetic division. The polynomial is getting divided by x+5, so we can say that x = -5. To set up the synthetic division, you take the coefficient of each term in the polynomial: 2 for 2x^2, -6 for 6x, and 2 for 2.

To do synthetic division, the numbers on the bottom are multiplied by -5 then added to the numbers on top. The number to the bottom right is the remainder. It is important to know that you do get the same answer by using long division, only it's a little more complicated.
