0.1 = 1/10

=> 1/10 x 1/10 = 1/100 = 0.01

Well, have you done indices? As in 10^2=100?

0.1 is the same as 10^-1. When you multiply two numbers with indices, you add the index, so when you have:
(10^-1) x (10^-1), you end up with 10^(-1 + -1)=10^-2

Now, 10^-2 is 0.01.

It's a little hard to comprehend if you haven't done index laws. The other way to look at it, if you haven't done the index laws, is the way the other guy did it.

1 x 1 = 1
1 x 0.1 = 0.1
1 x 0.01 = 0.01

As you can see from this, the closer the numbers being multiplied are to zero, the smaller the answers are.

So..
if 1 x 0.1 = 0.1
and you make the 1 smaller, the answer will become smaller than the original answer.

0.1 x 0.1 = 0.01

You move the 1 in the answer one decimal place to the right (compared to 1 x 0.1 = 0.1) because you moved the 1 one decimal place to the right (from 1.0 --> 0.1).

You could continue with this to deepen your understanding if necessary.
0.01 x 0.1 = 0.001
0.01 x 0.01 = 0.0001
etc..

An easier way to figure out the answer, is the number of zeros (ie. 0.1 x 0.1 has two zeros, so the answer has two zeros --- 0.01)
