Let's say the original price was X. What they're doing is taking 20% of the original price, then they subtract that amount from the original price to get the discounted price. So:

X - (X * .20) = \$25.00. This can be rewritten as:
X - .2X = \$25.00, or .8X = \$25.00.

To get X, divide both sides by .8:

X = \$25.00/.8 = \$31.25.

You can check your answer by working backwards. What's 20% off of \$31.25?
\$31.25 * .2 = \$6.25. Now subtract the \$6.25 from \$31.25: \$31.25 - \$6.25 = \$25.00.

So the original price was \$31.25. The discount was \$6.25.

How much was the discount? 5 dollars
How much was the original price? 25 dollars
How much was the discounted price? 20 dollars

20% of 25 is 5 dollars

Working: 20%=20%

-
.20 x \$25 = \$5

\$5 discount
