Solve for x. Algebra Help

1. 6(x+2) = 4 (x-5)

2. 4x-5 = 2x + 13

3. 2(x-3) + 3x = 14

you get one freebie, and then you'll either have to do the rest yourelf (this would be best), or find another to help you.

1. rule number one: parentheses are evil, and we must destroy them! in my toolshed, i have a parenthesis-steamroller-destroyer i call "the distributive law" (perhaps you've heard of it...it's a big hit on i-tunes..?)

so 6(x+2) = 6x + 6(2) = 6x + 12 (this is just the left-hand side).

same thing, on the right!

4(x - 5) = 4x - 4(5) = 4x - 20. gee, i feel better already.

next job: i wanna see x's just on one side of the equation! space is limited on this planet, and those darn x's are taking homes away from the homeless! pick a side....

ok, i see you picked the left side. fine. be that way.

we shall send the x's on the right side an....eviction notice!

so,,, to get rid of x's what do we do? we steal them! (aka as subtraction, in slightly fussier circles).

so....the right side: subtract the x's! 4x - 20 - 4x = 4x - 4x - 20 = 0x - 20 = -20. x's gone.

wait a minute...what's that? the left side is saying: hey, now, no fair!

if the right side gets x's subtracted, i want them subtracted, too!

well, fair is fair...but...i only subtracted 4 x's from the right side, so you only get 4 x's subtracted from you. capiche?

so...the left side is now....6x + 12 - 4x = 6x - 4x + 12 = 2x + 12.

let's let our two sides enjoy a sweet romantic reunion:

2x + 12 = -20.

another "pet peeve" of mine...for crying out loud get all the numbers on one side, too!

so...that 12 on the left...it's gotta go...i mean...it's gotta GO!
