Difference between inverse and direct variation

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-09-11] [Hit: ]
direct variation means that the relationship between x and y is y=kx, so it would always graph as a line through the origin. As x gets bigger,Inverse variation is y =k/x, so as x gets bigger, y gets smaller.......
Can someone please explain to me how i can tell whether a problem is Inverse, direct, or neither?
I need help especially on these two problems:
1. x=-7

2. 3x-3y=0

Basically, direct variation means that the relationship between x and y is y=kx, so it would always graph as a line through the origin. As x gets bigger, so does y (disregarding any negative signs)

Inverse variation is y =k/x, so as x gets bigger, y gets smaller. (disregarding any negative signs)
1) neither. Y can be anything, so the graph is a vertical line.

2)Rewrite as 3y=3x, or y = 1*x. This is direct variation.

Examples of direct var: y= 3x, y= -2x, y= (3/4)x, y= x/3
Examples of inverse: y= 3/x , y= -2/x, y=2/(3x)

Hoping this helps!
